Active Pursuit

Daily Reading: Matthew 13

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. (Matthew 13.44-46 )

Devotional Thought: In the above verses, Jesus describes the kingdom of heaven as both a hidden treasure and a pearl. Can you imagine how you would feel if you found a treasure? You would be bursting with joy, wanting to tell everyone, especially if you had spent countless hours seeking this treasure.

The men described in this passage sold everything so they could have that treasure, which is Jesus. Are you willing to sacrifice everything for Jesus? Would you give up your addictions, your reputation, your time and your money to serve Jesus?  These men not only sacrificed their livelihoods for Jesus, but they also actively pursued Jesus as well. They got up early in the morning and walked the streets, looking for Jesus. They sweated in the sun and dug holes to find Jesus. They talked to people and asked questions about Jesus. They were desperate for Jesus.

Whenever I think about people sacrificing for Jesus, I think about the Christians meeting in basements with lighted candles, and the ones that die for loving Jesus. They are willing to risk their lives, so that they can serve Jesus and worship him. In America, we take for granted the freedom that we have to seek God publicly. We are fortunate to be able to worship openly and freely.

Today, I challenge you to deny yourself and to actively pursue the Savior!

1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man! ” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. 5 You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: 6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.
