Daily Reading: Revelation 3
Scripture Focus: Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. (Revelation 3.2)
Devotional Thought: Lana and I were in Nashville to view the eclipse with our daughter and granddaughters. We took off for home in the late afternoon, shortly after the total eclipse was complete. We thought we had a five hour drive before us. That five hour drive turned into a ten hour marathon as two million people left Nashville together. There were times that I just wanted to pull out of traffic and find a place to stop, but I had a job to do - get Lana home safely and get me home, too! I just kept telling myself: "One more mile..." We made it. We were weary and bleary, but we completed the journey. And, oh, how good it felt to arrive at home!
As Jesus spoke to the church in Sardis, he realized that they, too, had become weary on the journey, so weary that they had fallen asleep! Life was still in them, but it was "about to die." They needed to take immediate action. He told them to wake up and complete the work that was theirs to do.
How about you? Are you growing weary on the journey? Are you tempted to give up your work for the Lord? Don't be eclipsed by the eclipse. Keep going. One more mile. Remember the words of the Apostle Paul: "Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up" (Galatians 6.9).
Prayer: Father, thank you for giving me grace and strength for the journey. Help me, O Lord, to complete the work you have given me to do. In the name of Jesus - who did not stop short of the cross - I pray. Amen.
Psalm of the Day: 8 Zion hears and is glad, and the daughters of Judah rejoice, because of your judgments, O LORD. 9 For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. 10 O you who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked. 11 Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. 12 Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name! (Psalms 97:8-12)
