Daily Reading: Song of Solomon 3-4
Scripture Focus: I found him whom my soul loves. (Song of Solomon 3.4)
Devotional Thought: It was Sunday, August 20, 1972 when I found "him whom my soul loves."
He began pursuing me before I was born, before even time began. But when I became a young teen, I began to notice Him. I began to know that something was missing in my life, but I didn't know what it was. He placed me in situations where the Spirit was moving, though I could not define what was happening. Slowly a heart-hunger awakened in me. Closer and closer He came. Relentlessly, He whispered love into my soul. Then, on that wonderful Sunday morning I came face to face with Him! I found Him whom my soul loves!
One night, fast asleep in her bed, the bride in Song of Solomon dreamt of her beloved. She became desperate for him. She sought for him. She would not be denied. Her longing was rewarded - she found him! Her heart was satisfied. Her deepest dream came true.
You and I were made for the love of God. Implanted in each of us is an innate desire to know God and be known by him, to love God and be loved by him. Though we may try to substitute other things - possessions, people, power, position, prestige, pleasure and prosperity - this longing that will not be satisfied with anything less. But when we finally satisfy it, we exclaim with the ancient bride: "I found him whom my soul loves."
Have you found him whom your soul loves?
Prayer: "All my lifelong I had panted for a drink from some cool spring that I hoped would quench the burning of the thirst I felt within. Hallelujah! I have found Him - Whom my soul so long has craved! Jesus satisfies my longings; through his blood I now am saved." Amen. (Clara Williams)
Psalm of the Day: 1 Remember, O LORD, in David's favor, all the hardships he endured, 2 how he swore to the LORD and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob, 3 "I will not enter my house or get into my bed, 4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids, 5 until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob." (Psalms 132:1-5)
