Like Precious Faith

Daily Reading:  2 Peter 1

Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1.1)

Devotional Thought: While 1 Peter was written to help Christians endure suffering, Peter wrote his second letter to warn Christians against false teachings and teachers.  In light of false teachings, some things jump out of this salutation:

  • Faith in Jesus is Faith in God.  From the very earliest days of the church – even to the Apostles themselves – Jesus has been proclaimed as God incarnate, God in human flesh.  But also from the early days of the church there were those who tried to refute the claims of Jesus’ divinity.  Peter himself had to struggle to understand that, but as he got to know Jesus, Peter was thoroughly convinced that Jesus was indeed God.  And he came to understand that Jesus was Savior in a unique way – as the Lamb slain for our sins!

  • We have received this faith.  We have faith only through the righteousness of God. This faith is not something that we come up with through logical examination and deductive reasoning.  No, it is given us from the heart and mind of God.  It is not our faith to make and manipulate.  It is the gift of God!  (See Ephesians 2.9.)

  • We share this faith.  Peter was a first generation believer.  Those who had accepted the Lordship of Christ through his ministry were second generation believers.  But it was the same faith, and they had the same standing in the Kingdom as did Peter.  There is not a hierarchy in the Kingdom of God.  I like how the King James Version states it: they “have obtained with us like precious faith.”  Just as we do not author the faith, so we do not hold exclusive license to it!

Are you exercising this "like precious faith"?

Prayer: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the gift of faith.  Help me to exercise that faith, taking you at your word and living according to your promises.  Help me also to help others obtain that faith.  Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 58:1-8

1 Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? Do you judge the children of man uprightly?

2 No, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth.

3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies.

4 They have venom like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops its ear,

5 so that it does not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter.

6 O God, break the teeth in their mouths; tear out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD!

7 Let them vanish like water that runs away; when he aims his arrows, let them be blunted.

8 Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime, like the stillborn child who never sees the sun.
