The Net Not Torn

Daily ReadingJohn 21

Scripture Focus: Although there were so many, the net was not torn. (John 21.11)

Devotional Thought: Jesus has told us to follow him and he would make us fishers of men.  This incident was a living lesson of “fishing” for souls:

  • Jesus’ presence makes the difference!  Having worked all night in their own wisdom and strength, the disciples had nothing.  But, when Jesus showed up – they had abundant results!  When we seek to see souls saved, we need the power and presence of Jesus!  Otherwise, our nets will be empty.

  • Jesus.  While their obedience was not based on perfect understanding, they did indeed obey.  And, when they did, the nets were full!  Our understanding will be less than perfect, but if we will obey, then God will fill in the gaps.

  • The net didn’t tear.  The “catch” was preserved.  You see, God wants his church to grow.  Not just for people to make decisions, but for them to become functioning members of the body of Christ.  Christ’s mission on earth was "to seek and to save the lost."  He is behind this enterprise.  The net won’t tear.  It will hold us!

  • There were many kinds of fish.  Why that unusual number, why 153?  In that day, people believed that there were 153 different species of fish.  Jesus was showing that he wanted his followers to come from all walks of life and all backgrounds.  Rich and poor, Jew and Gentile, educated and illiterate, cultured and coarse, black and white and brown… Jesus wants all types of people!

So friend, put your net out on the right side of the boat!  Be a fisher of men today.

Prayer: Lord, you are the Savior of the world.  You gave your life as a ransom for all God's lost children.  Help me to believe in your power to save, and get out there and fish!  Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 38.17-22

17 For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me.

18 I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.

19 But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully.

20 Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.

21 Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me!

22 Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!
