Attempt Great Things for God

Daily Reading2 Corinthians 2-3

Since we have such a hope, we are very bold... (2 Corinthians 3.12)

Devotional Thought: In 2 Corinthians 3, the Apostle Paul writes about the glory of the Spirit’s ministry.  It is an unfading glory that inspires and encourages.  Because of that, he says, “We are very bold.”  I wonder sometimes if boldness would describe my Christian life and testimony.  Does it describe yours?  William Carey, who is sometimes known as the father of modern missions, once said, “Expect great things from God.  Attempt great things for God.”  I believe it is time for The Church to answer that call.  Be bold!

Why is boldness needed?  Because nothing comes easy.  We know that every good endeavor will have its problems and difficulties.  The key to success in what we do for God lies in the ability to continue expecting great things when the evidence demands another verdict.  But we have hope, so we can be bold.  This is particularly true in Christian witness.

Later in chapter 3, Paul writes: “When one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed”.  It is true that sin separates people from God.  Self-will prevents them from seeing and accepting the truth.  But just the slightest turn toward God will begin to remove the veil that hides the truth.  As we witness to those around us – giving reason for the hope that we have – they will begin to turn to The Truth.  Then the veil will be drawn back – little by little – until they see the truth.

Will you be bold in what you attempt for God? Whether it is in Christian witness or service to God and your community, you have a hope that you will succeed, for you have a hope in a never-failing God!

Prayer: Lord, your glory is unfading.  When you came forth from the tomb, you defeated all the shadows that darken our lives, and you shined your glorious light and truth and love upon us.  Help us to be bold in you, that our lights may shine and people may glorify our Father in heaven.  Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 113:4-9

4 The LORD is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens.

5 Who is like the LORD our God, the One who sits enthroned on high,

6 who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth?

7 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap;

8 he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people.

9 He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the LORD.
