Daily Reading: Philemon 1
Scripture Focus: For I have derived much joy and comfort from your love, my brother, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you... Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. (Philemon 1.7, 21)
Devotional Thought: Here's a truism: "True forgiveness must cost something."
In the case of Philemon, forgiveness would cost a great deal monetarily, yet, Paul was confident that Philemon would do that and even more. Where did Paul's confidence come from?
· Philemon's love had given him joy and comfort. Philemon must have learned the art of communicating his love. Paul had no doubt that he was indeed a cherished friend of Philemon, and their friendship was genuine.
· Philemon refreshed the hearts of the saints. Paul could have confidence also because of Philemon’s attitude toward other Christians. I’ve seen people who have been very kind, forgiving and generous to their close Christian companions, or to a certain circle of friends. These same people, however, are not as kind, forgiving and generous to others in the church. Paul had seen the breadth of Philemon's friendship. What an encouraging thing in this situation, for he was presenting Onesimus as a fellow saint with Philemon!
· Philemon was Paul's fellow worker. Philemon was invested as a fellow worker in his church. The church actually met in his house! He had opened his heart and home! Seeing someone invest like this in the work of the church instills great confidence. On the contrary, when I see people who are not willing to bear the load, to be inconvenienced, or to give way so that others can find The Way – then my confidence is shaken.
· Philemon had great faith in the Lord Jesus and he was active in sharing his faith. Paul’s confidence was boosted when he heard reports of Philemon’s evangelistic spirit. It takes a lot of faith to share your faith!
Does your life inspire confidence?
Prayer: Jesus, you inspire confidence in me because of your great love. Help me to have that love, to refresh the hearts of the saints, to join in your work, and to share my faith. May my life inspire others to receive your love, too. Amen.
Psalm of the Day: Psalm 119.169-176
169 Let my cry come before you, O Lord; give me understanding according to your word!
170 Let my plea come before you; deliver me according to your word.
171 My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes.
172 My tongue will sing of your word, for all your commandments are right.
173 Let your hand be ready to help me, for I have chosen your precepts.
174 I long for your salvation, O Lord, and your law is my delight.
175 Let my soul live and praise you, and let your rules help me.
176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.
