Don't Leave the Ice Cream Inside the Freezer!

Daily Reading: Matthew 20

And behold, there were two blind men sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was passing by, they cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” ...  And stopping, Jesus called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?”  They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” (Matthew 20.30, 32-33)

Devotional Thought: When I was a youngster, I was in the habit of answering questions: “I don’t care.”  I remember once when I was visiting my uncle, he stood in front of the open freezer door and asked me what kind of ice cream I wanted.  When I said, "I don't care," he said, “Well, I don’t care either," and he closed the freezer door with the ice cream still on the inside!  I learned very quickly to be specific with my uncle!

Jesus asked two beggars along the roadside what they wanted him to do.  They had probably been asked that question by hundreds of others.  Perhaps they had answered with, “Do you have any spare change?”  Or “Could you get me something to eat?”  Or "Could you lead me back to the village?”  But when Jesus asked them, their answer was different: “Let our eyes be opened!”  They absolutely believed that Jesus was able to deliver on his offer, and they were not about to miss it.  What would have happened if they had asked for something less?

What should you ask for?  It's open-ended, isn't it?  The question was then and is now, "What do you want me to do for you?"  The answer is tied to Jesus himself.  It is obvious that we should not ask for something that is contrary to his nature.  But outside of that, the question doesn't seem to come with any stipulations!

Are you telling Jesus what you want him to do for you?  Don't leave the ice cream inside the freezer!

Prayer: Lord, when you ask me "What do you want?" there is lots of "ice cream" inside the door.  Help me not to leave the ice cream in the freezer, but to ask for and receive the rich blessings of your grace.  Amen.
