Get it?

Daily Reading: Matthew 11

I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children...  No one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. (Matthew 11.25-27)

Devotional Thought: My friend bragged to me that he had a PHD.  "You do?" I asked somewhat skeptically.  "Yep!" he said, "a Post Hole Digger!"  Get it?  (Sorry.  I should have given a "dad joke" warning!)

Do you have a PhD?  No?  Good news...

·       You don’t have to be a PhD to “get it.”  The way of salvation is not hard to understand.  The Old Testament prophet said, “Even if they are fools, they shall not go astray” (Isaiah 35.8).  All we need to do is hold on to the hand of the One who leads us. 

·       God wills that we “get it.”  God has not made it difficult to find him.  The Apostle Paul said in his sermon at Lystra that God “did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness” (Acts 14.17).  God desires that all come to the knowledge of salvation. 

·       Finally, without Jesus, we will never “get it.”  In another place, Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14.6).  We may try all sorts of other routes, but only one way leads to God: Jesus Christ.  All other ways are at best detours and at worst dead ends.

One night after church, Calleigh and Colton, our youth pastor’s children, walked with me into the parking lot.  Five-year-old Calleigh instinctively grabbed my hand.  I then reached out to three-year-old Colton who quickly did the same.  They knew the way was within reach.  Even children can "get it."  Do you?

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for revealing the way of the kingdom to me.  I deny myself and take up my cross today to follow you.  Amen.
