God's Reply

Daily Reading: Romans 11

Scripture Focus: But what is God's reply to him? (Romans 11.4)

Devotional Thought: Elijah had just come from a great spiritual victory.  God had sent consuming fire upon the sacrifice of Elijah who had been in a confrontation with the prophets of Baal.  That put Elijah, however, in the crosshairs of the king’s wife, Jezebel, who was a Baal worshipper herself.  On the lam, Elijah complained to God that he was all alone.  There was no one left to serve God but him.  In referring to that, Paul asks the question, “But what is God's reply?”

God’s reply in 1 Kings and here in Romans was: "Son, you don’t have the full picture.  I've got a plan.  You are not alone."  If Elijah had not asked the question, he wouldn’t have received the answer.

Some people say that we should not question God.  I disagree.  If we don’t understand something, then we shouldquestion God.  It would be foolish not to.  There are probably questions that we shouldn’t have to ask, questions that we would know the answer to if we were living close to God and reading his Word.  But, Elijah was living close to God; he had been standing on God’s Word; he had been faithful.  He had legitimate concerns.  His life was at risk.  He was under great pressure.  He needed answers.

Do you have questions?  Ask God.  Do they spring from times of great personal victory?  Ask God.  Do they pour forth from a wounded spirit in the throes of anguish?  Ask God.  God will not refuse a question that comes from a truly hungry, honestly seeking heart.  In matters with God, the old adage we have often heard is true: “The only foolish question is the one you don’t ask.”

Prayer: O God, you are enthroned above the heavens.  While I have limited knowledge, you have perfect perspective and plans.  I trust you, O Lord.  When I have questions, I know you will reply.  In Jesus' name, amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 28.6-9

6 Blessed be the LORD! For he has heard the voice of my pleas for mercy.

7 The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.

8 The LORD is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed.

9 Oh, save your people and bless your heritage! Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
