God's Theory of Relativity

Daily Reading: 2 Peter 3

Scripture Focus: The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (2 Peter 3.9)

Devotional Thought: The special theory of relativity postulates that as speed increases, time slows, until you reach the point when time stands still - the speed of light. I say that as age increases, time speeds up... When I was a child, it was a year between Christmases. Now, it seems to be just a few weeks!

Time also is different as we age in Christ...

· The Lord is not slow. From the very beginning of creation in Genesis to the end of history in Revelation, we see that God is timing everything out in order to work all things together for our good.

· His promises are sure. God made a promise to Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the sand on the seashore and the stars in the sky. He promised David that he would not fail to have a descendant on the throne. History has shown us that these promises pointed to Jesus! What promises has he made to you? They are certain in Jesus!

· His patience is steady. I've noticed all my friends are getting older - so much older than me it seems! With their age, they seem to be gaining patience, waiting for God to do his work. When I think how old God is, I realize he must have tremendous patience. But, to what end?

· His goal is salvation. God is walking at just the right speed, working all things for our good, waiting on stubborn hearts for one purpose - to bring souls to repentance. God has planned to populate his kingdom with those whom he loves, those for whom his Son died. Thanks be to God for this wonderful love!

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you are not slow and that your promises are sure. Help me to remain steady as you are working out salvation for me and for those I love. Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 62.5-12

5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. 7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah

9 Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion; in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath. 10 Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

11 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this: that power belongs to God, 12 and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love. For you will render to a man according to his work.
