Hey! That Was My Idea!

Daily Reading: 1 Chronicles 13

David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and from the Lord our God (1 Chronicles 13.1-2)

Devotional Thought: Though I'm not an "It's my way or the highway" kind of guy, I must confess that I love my own ideas!  Whenever I come up with a solution or plan of action, I feel protective of my mental creation.  If someone suggests another course, I get defensive.  It's a character trait I have to constantly guard against.  I don't think I'm alone in this, either, but you be your own judge.

King David had an idea.  To solidify his position as king, he decided to gather people together from all over the kingdom and to then bring the "ark of our God to us."  It was a good, strategic idea.  But, David didn't want just good strategy.  He wanted the  blessing of God and the people!  So, he "consulted with" commanders and leaders and all the assembly of Israel.  David included people of influence and people of common status in the decision.  Throughout the process, he was also careful to keep the focus on the will of God: "If it seem good to you and from the Lord our God."

As it turned out in this instance, David and his advisors did not look into the matter far enough, and someone lost their life as a result.  But, what could have been a disaster for the leader turned into ultimate victory because everyone owned the problem.  While unity is easy in success, it is most tested in failure!  The people remained united in the agreed-upon goal, and they soon tried again, this time seeking more input.  They succeeded!

What about you?  Are you like me, enamored with your own ideas?  We all need to take a lesson from King David and consult with others and with God!

Prayer: Father, thank you for giving me wisdom, ideas and solutions.  But help me to recognize that you have done that for others as well and to seek out their input.  And most of all, Lord, help me to know what seems good to you.  Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 41:10-13

10 But you, O LORD, be gracious to me, and raise me up, that I may repay them!

11 By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy will not shout in triumph over me.

12 But you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever.

13 Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Amen and Amen.
