I'm So Glad I'm a Part of the Family of God

Daily Reading: Hebrews 2

Scripture Focus: That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers. (Hebrews 2.11)

Devotional Thought: Avery was my first grandchild.  As such, she had the privilege of growing with the family.  I remember once when she was trying to figure out the relationship between me and my son-in-law (her uncle, not her father).  I sometimes called him “son”.  First of all, she wanted to set him straight: “You weren’t always in this family.”  She had apparently figured out she had been in the family just a bit longer than him!  But then, she tried to figure out just how he fit in the family.   She asked me, “Is he my mom’s brother-in-law?”  "Yes.”  "You are his father-in-law?”  “Yes.” “So, he is your son-in-law?”  “Yes!  He wasn't in our family before, but he’s a part of our family now.  Just like your Uncle Weaz.  We are happy to have them in the family.”

Families change.  New members are added.  Marriages, births, adoptions ...

You and I weren’t always in the family of God, either.  But, because of what Jesus did – he made us holy by his blood – we are now in the holy family.  Jesus is not ashamed to call us his brothers and sisters!  He is glad to have us in the family.  Kind of makes you want to sing that old chorus: “I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God!”

Prayer: I thank you, Lord, for the incredible privilege of being a child of God.  You have made me a part of the eternal family.  And, I'm so glad!  Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 46.8-11

8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, how he has brought desolations on the earth.

9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the chariots with fire.

10 "Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"

11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Selah
