No Need to Waver

Daily Reading: Romans 4
No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. (Romans 4.20-21)
Devotional Thought: When God first called Abraham, he promised to bless him and to make him a blessing. Part of that promise was that God would make Abraham into a great nation. This brought with it the implied promise of children for Abraham and his wife – who were both getting along in years. God clarified and reiterated that promise over and over, until finally he said to Abraham, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son” (Genesis 18.10). That’s getting pretty specific, isn’t it?
Abraham experienced false starts and dashed hopes as he made his journey toward the promise. But – and this is the part that really speaks to me – “No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God.” Notice how Paul worded that: No unbelief made him waver. As you review Abraham’s life, it is obvious that there were times when unbelief tried to force its way into his thoughts. But over and over again, by the grace of God and by holding on to the promise, Abraham did not waver. Yes, there was unbelief, but it did not get the best of him! How did he overcome that unbelief? By pushing back against it! He continued to walk with God despite the yet unrealized promise, and as he did that his faith grew stronger!
Have you experienced false starts and dashed hopes? Is unbelief persistently pushing into your mind? Push back! Do what Abraham did and keep walking with God. All the promises of God are "Yes!" in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 1.20).
Prayer: Jesus, through you I speak my "amen" to God for his glory (2 Corinthians 1.20). I believe. Help my unbelief that I might not waver. Amen
Psalm of the Day: Psalm 19.1-6
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,
5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
