Daily Reading: 2 Corinthians 6-7
Scripture Focus: We put no obstacle in anyone's way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry. (2 Corinthians 6.3)
Devotional Thought: The Apostle Paul was quite concerned about how his actions impacted others. He was careful how he lived, and urged the Christians to be aware of their influence for good and for evil, too. In 2 Corinthians 6, he makes a simple statement that reiterates a theme of his life: “Put no obstacle in anyone’s way.” While it was a description of how he lived, I don’t think Paul would mind if we view it as an imperative.
Do you stop and consider how your actions affect others?
Several years ago, Avery – my oldest granddaughter – had been staying at her father’s home in NC. He heard her use the word “jerk” while playing with her older step-brother. He was understandably upset and asked my daughter where Avery heard that word being used. A couple weeks later, we were all together at my home, and in jest, I called one of my sons-in-law “Jerk.” I got the stink eye from Jenny, Avery’s mother. “Dad, we don’t use that word!” I realized that she was right.
I was reminded how influential my actions are – even my playful actions. I certainly don’t want to put any stumbling block in the path of any of my impressionable little grandchildren. It’s important enough to me that I changed my habit. It may have been innocent enough for me and my son-in-law, but I was leaving a negative impression on my precious little granddaughter.
What stumbling blocks are we putting in front of people? Attitudes? Hurtful words? Dismissive spirits? Prejudice? Sinful actions? Harmful habits? Destructive lifestyles? Things may seem innocent enough to us, but we must be mindful of how we impact others, and “Put no obstacle in anyone’s way.”
Prayer: Father in heaven, thank you for giving me forgiveness of sins and new life in Jesus Christ. Help me, O Lord, to live such an exemplary life that I would put no obstacle in anyone's path. In Jesus' name, amen.
Psalm of the Day: Psalm 115.14-18
14 May the Lord give you increase, you and your children!
15 May you be blessed by the Lord, who made heaven and earth!
16 The heavens are the Lord’s heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.
17 The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any who go down into silence.
18 But we will bless the Lord from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the Lord!
