Pass the Bread, Please

Daily Reading:  Matthew 4

Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4)

Devotional Thought: My grandsons Finn and Wade are on pretty strict eating schedules.  As such, their bodies are conditioned to want to eat at particular times throughout the day (and night!).  Last week I was with Wade and his mommy near the time for his "lunch."  I was holding him, and he was pretty happy.  (As was I!)  But all of a sudden, he let out a cry.  "What's wrong?" I asked his mommy.  "It's his lunch time.  He eats at 11:30," she replied.  I looked at the clock.  Can you guess what time it was?  11:30!  I thought to myself, "Man, this kid's not very patient!"  But I can't say too much about them; yesterday I was delayed in eating lunch until about 2:00, and by the way I was complaining, you would have thought I hadn’t eaten in days!

Are you that particular about getting your meals on time?

Are we just as particular about reading the Word of God as we are about getting our "three squares a day"?  It is very important for our spiritual meals to be regular and consistent.  If Jesus needed God's Word to face temptation, then don't we as well?  That’s why I encourage you to make "The Climb" with me, reading a chapter a day!  We are able to take his Word into our hearts and minds and that makes us stronger spiritually.  I would urge you to stick with the schedule, for you do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God!

Jesus believed that the Word of God was just as vital to his life as was food.  The same is true about us.  So... "Pass the bread please!"

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your Word.  Help me to hunger and thirst for it and through it to fill my soul with "The Bread that came down from heaven!  Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 84:8-12

8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah

9 Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed!

10 For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

12 O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!
