Daily Reading: John 16

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. (John 16.33)

Devotional Thought: Is there hope for peace in the world today?   Tension between political parties, ethnic groups, and economic classes threaten our peace.  The family structure in America is falling apart as marriages end in divorce, children are raised in single-family homes, drug addiction robs households of the necessities, and domestic abuse threatens health and safety.  COVID19 is not only taking lives but is also dividing our nation.  It is just as Jesus said: “In this world you will have tribulation.”

Where can we find peace?  Take this to heart: Jesus has overcome the world!  When Jesus arose from the grave, he defeated the dominion of death and all its accompanying sorrow.  Yes, I am concerned about the future for my family and my nation.  I wonder about the extent of COVID deaths and the reach of government.  But I also know that the Bible says, in speaking about Jesus, “The government will be on his shoulders” (Isaiah 9.6).  We must turn control over to Jesus.

Have you learned to do that?  Fill your mind with scripture and surround yourself with God’s people.  I’m not advocating a “head-in-the-sand” approach to life, but I am reminding you that those who serve Jesus have been assured ultimate victory.  So, in the words of the Apostle Paul: “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4.7-9).

Prayer: Jesus you have "broken down in [your] flesh the dividing wall of hostility... Create in yourself one new man in place of the two, so making peace."  Amen.  (Ephesians 2.14-15)

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 38.17-22

17 For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me.

18 I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin.

19 But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully.

20 Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.

21 Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, be not far from me!

22 Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!
