Such Love!

Writer: Melissa BurksMelissa Burks

Daily Reading: Romans 8

Scripture Focus:  And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8.28)

Devotional Thought: As I approached the time to write this devotional, Lana, my wife, told me, “I don’t know what you’re going to write about when you get to Romans 8. There’s just so much to choose from.”   How true that is!

As I read the chapter, however, I quickly settled on verse 28:

  • We know.  I want to know who God is and what he is all about.  Although I will never exhaust the riches of his wisdom and grace, I can know him.  I long to know him.  I go to his Word to know him.

  • For those who love God.  Do you love him?  Enter deeply into his love.  You will find he is faithful and dependable, strong and understanding.

  • All things.  God sees everything about our lives and our world.  Nothing is outside his scope of understanding.  Nothing escapes his sovereign territory.  Whether we live in plenty or want, sickness or health, freedom or restraint, laughter or tears, God is there with us.

  • Work together.  Not only does he know where we are and what we face, not only is he there with us, God is at work where we are!  He is our strong and wise Father who is able to do “immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.”

  • For good.  Not everything that happens to us is good.  Sin causes evil, and God gives people freedom to choose sin.  Often that impacts us.  Yet, in all those things, God is working for our good!

  • Called according to his purpose.  We have all been called by God.  He has a purpose for us.  When we surrender ourselves to live within that purpose, his good is worked out in our lives completely.

Amen!

Prayer: Father God, I praise you that you are even now working for my good.  You have called me to yourself, and have given me a love that I have given back to you.  Oh, how I love you, Lord!  Amen.

Psalm of the Day: Psalm 27.7-10

7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me!

8 You have said, "Seek my face." My heart says to you, "Your face, LORD, do I seek."

9 Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, O you who have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation!

10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in.
