Super Hero

Daily Reading: Numbers 20

Scripture Focus: Tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle. (Numbers 20.8b)

Devotional Thought: Being a super-hero is risky business, isn't it? When you're up on a pedestal, people can see you. When they can see you, they see not only your strengths, but also your weaknesses! Just let me stay in the shadows, please!

I don't think I would want to be Moses. Moses didn't have that opportunity to stay in the shadows. God was all the time telling him to do crazy stuff - like turn his staff into a snake and grab it by the tail, or to raise his staff over the battle. In Numbers 20, Moses had to go out and get water out of a rock. And he couldn't do it on the side. No! God said, "Tell the rock before their eyes!"

God invites us to exhibit that same faith! We can stand before people and tell them that if they drink deeply of the Water of Life, that God will satisfy their thirst! Are we up to the task? It's so much easier to stay in the shadows. "I could never testify like that, preacher!"

I know what you mean, friend. Just writing these words makes my palms sweaty. I think about Peter saying, "In the name of Jesus walk!" Can I do that? Could you?

How about we start with what we can say? "Jesus has saved me and changed me." The miracle of a changed life is just as powerful as the miracle of water coming out of a rock. Let your light shine that people may glorify your Father who is in heaven! Then, you will be a "Super Hero!"

Prayer: Lord Jesus, give me faith and courage to testify for you. And help me to give all praise to you, for you alone are worthy. Not by might nor by power but by your Spirit and for your glory! Amen.

Psalm of the Day: 137 Righteous are you, O LORD, and right are your rules. 138 You have appointed your testimonies in righteousness and in all faithfulness. 139 My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget your words. 140 Your promise is well tried, and your servant loves it. 141 I am small and despised, yet I do not forget your precepts. 142 Your righteousness is righteous forever, and your law is true. 143 Trouble and anguish have found me out, but your commandments are my delight. 144 Your testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding that I may live. (Psalms 119:137-144)
