What About June 1?

Daily Reading: Zechariah 14

Scripture Focus: And on that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “Holy to the Lord.” And the pots in the house of the Lord shall be as the bowls before the altar. And every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy to the Lord of hosts. (Zechariah 14.20-21)

Devotional Thought: June 2, 1979. On that day, I was "set apart" for my bride, and she was "set apart" for me. The course of our lives was irreversibly changed.

Zechariah foresaw such a day for the people of God. On that "wedding" day...

  • There shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses “Holy to the Lord." Horses will no longer be needed for human warfare and policing. Instead, we shall proclaim, "The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold" (Psalm 18.2).

  • And the pots in the house of the Lord shall be as the bowls before the altar. The pots were used to prepare the portion of the offerings intended to be eaten by the worshipers before the altar. The bowls were used to collect and sprinkle the blood from the sacrifices. These pots and bowls will be continually open to us, as the Lord "always lives to make intercession for them." (Hebrews 7.25).

  • And every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy to the Lord of hosts. In that place, what we would consider common here shall be holy, for "Nothing unclean will ever enter it" (Revelation 21.27).

Thinking about June 2, I wondered, "What about June 1?" Yes, what about it? On June 1, the day before our wedding, I had already committed myself completely to Lana. I didn't wait until June 2. And, we shouldn't wait until "That Day" before we consecrate ourselves fully to the Lord.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the coming Day when everything shall be holy. Help me to live now as if that day has already arrived. Amen.

Psalm of the Day: 6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! "May they be secure who love you! 7 Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!" 8 For my brothers and companions' sake I will say, "Peace be within you!" 9 For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good. (Psalms 122:6-9)
