Fraidy Hole

Pastor Scott Wade

Daily Reading: Exodus 12

Scripture Focus: None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. (Exodus 12.22b)

Devotional Thought: Several years ago, I was talking to my friends Don and Pat and she mentioned that they didn't have a basement, but they did have a "fraidy hole."

"A 'fraidy hole'? What's that?"

"Oh, you know... That's where we go if we're afraid of a tornado coming."

I had never heard a storm shelter called that. But, it made sense. I'm a "fraidy cat" when it comes to tornados!

The Israelites needed their own "fraidy holes" when the plague of death came upon the firstborn of Egypt. God had instructed them to sprinkle the blood of the Passover lamb on the doorposts and lentils of their homes. As long as they were in their homes, they were safe. If they ventured outside of their homes, however, death awaited them. They were secure as long as they stayed sheltered under the blood until the dawning of the morning.

There is coming the dawning of an eternal morning. When that day arrives, death will be forever past. We will be safe in our eternal home. Until then, we are not to go out the door. Outside, nothing awaits us but death. We are to remain inside, "covered by the blood." Thank God for the blood of our Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ! May we never stray outside!

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for shedding your blood on the cross. Thank you for forgiveness of sins and for life everlasting. Help me to always remain under the shelter of your blood. Amen.

Psalm of the Day: 1 Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods? Do you judge the children of man uprightly? 2 No, in your hearts you devise wrongs; your hands deal out violence on earth. 3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies. 4 They have venom like the venom of a serpent, like the deaf adder that stops its ear, 5 so that it does not hear the voice of charmers or of the cunning enchanter. 6 O God, break the teeth in their mouths; tear out the fangs of the young lions, O LORD! 7 Let them vanish like water that runs away; when he aims his arrows, let them be blunted. 8 Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime, like the stillborn child who never sees the sun. (Psalms 58:1-8)
