Daily Reading: Philippians 4
When I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only... And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4.15, 19)
Devotional Thought: The Philippians held a dear place in the heart of Paul. They had been responsive to and generous toward his ministry. How grateful he was for the spirit of love and obedience they had shown! You get the feeling as you read this chapter that he was speaking as a mother to her children.
The Philippians were singled out for their support of Paul’s ministry. Without their support, Paul would not have been as effective as he was. After he had left them and had gone on to other missionary work, their generosity enabled him to give his full time to ministry – not concerning himself with keeping food on the table and a roof over his head. In addition to their financial offerings, Paul received "soft support" from the Philippians while he was a prisoner. Without friends and family providing food and personal needs, prisoners would be left in a most desperate situation. But, they did not forget him at this time! The giving was not as “glamorous” and there was not as much to report to make them look good, but they didn’t forget Paul.
In verse 19, I feel that Paul was doing more than just stating a spiritual principle of how God repays the generosity of his children. Paul was actually proclaiming the blessing that he desired them to have. In the form of a prophetic prayer, he said "My God will supply every need!" What great faith he had, mingled with gratitude, and infused with love! I know the feeling, for I have felt God’s grace given to me through many loving, generous expressions.
Remember when you give to support God’s work and workers, you will be richly repaid. We can never out give God!
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for those who support the preaching of the gospel. Thank you for those responsible for the gospel reaching me. Bless them in measureless abundance, I pray! Amen.
Psalm of the Day: Psalm 132.11-12
11 The LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back: "One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant and my testimonies that I shall teach them, their sons also forever shall sit on your throne."
