Promises, Promises

Daily Reading: Hebrews 5-6

Scripture Focus: Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. (Hebrews 6.15)

Devotional Thought: I love to go to my kids' houses. For one thing, they have to pay the light bill and buy the groceries for a change. But even better, a trip to the kids promises to be a visit with grandkids! Entering their homes, we immediately want that promise fulfilled! When I go in my middle daughter's house, I see something else that makes me smile, too. The kids have a framed photo from their wedding with the following words above and below the picture: "I might ask you something tomorrow..." and "I might say yes."

I've always liked that because it reminds me of the promise that they made to each other even before they were married. It was the promise to get married! And they waited patiently for it.

Abraham's walk with God was like that. God made a promise to him to give him a family that was greater than the stars in the sky. But, Abraham had to wait. And he did. All through his life he waited. Even after the son of promise - Isaac - came along, Abraham continued to wait. There was more to the promise! There was a city with foundations, whose builder and maker is God (Hebrews 11). Abraham never saw that part of the promise until he passed from this life to the next. But he kept his faith. He waited patiently. And now, he has obtained the promise.

Are you waiting on God? Wait patiently. You, too, will obtain the promise.

Prayer: Father, thank you that you are faithful to every promise that you make. In Christ you have said the Amen to all these promises. When you delay, O Lord, help me to wait patiently and so to obtain the promise. Amen.

Psalm of the Day: 1 The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. 3 Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest. 4 He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: 5 "Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!" 6 The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah (Psalms 50:1-6)
